In a world where high emissions, waste and plastic pollution from manufacturers continue to blight our world, the need for more sustainable production alternatives – particularly recyclable ones – has never been greater.
Thankfully, more environmentally friendly manufacturing methods are available in the forms of metal injection moulding (MIM).
Here, we look at the environmental benefits of MIM technology – and how it can help your business meet its sustainability goals.
Why is MIM a more sustainable choice?
MIM is recognised as green technology because of the way it minimises waste.
That’s because MIM only uses the exact amount of metal required to make a product. When considering the level of intricacy required for the types of parts MIM is used for, such low levels of waste simply wouldn’t be possible via conventional manufacturing methods.
During the moulding stage of the MIM process, any waste materials produced are 100% recyclable and are filtered back into the process under strict controls, ready to go through the process again with no scrap materials generated and no detriment to product integrity.
On the topic of structural integrity – MIM products can use significantly less amounts of material compared to conventional methods while retaining their strength. That can be achieved by coring or hollowing out each part to reduce weight while staying just as strong.
All of that combined means your product will arrive to you with a much lower carbon footprint – and likely a lower overall bill!
Could it become even greener?
Just like all high-volume manufacturing methods, MIM isn’t completely green. But it remains an exciting, relatively new technology that is continuing to advance at a rapid pace.
MIM production already uses fewer steps than most other manufacturing methods – reducing energy usage – but it is getting even better year by year.
The CMG team witness firsthand the benefits the technology can bring and are proud to support our clients in helping meet their sustainability goals while cutting time and costs.
